The Origin

A partnership
born on the mountain.

"Kilimanjaro showed me a reality most people never see: the guides and porters are the ones who truly make the mountain happen."

In 2025, I climbed Kilimanjaro and met Apolo — Apolo John Sasa, 36 years old, born and raised in Moshi, at the foot of the mountain. Over 10 years guiding expeditions and around 250 summits on Kilimanjaro.

During the expedition, Apolo told me about the hardships faced by guides and porters. Despite being the backbone of the entire mountain experience, many end up earning very little, since a large share of what clients pay goes to park fees and international agencies.

That's where GoKili was born. We decided to create a direct partnership where I would connect people from around the world with Apolo, making the experience more affordable and ensuring fairer pay for the guides, cooks, and porters who make it all possible.

🤝

Direct local operation

We work directly with Apolo and his team in Moshi. No middlemen. No outsourcing. Every dollar goes to those who actually run the mountain.

👥

Groups of up to 6 people

We are not mass tourism. Small groups mean more attention, more safety, and a completely different experience from any standard package tour.

🛡️

Safety as a priority

Pulse oximeter, acclimatization protocols, Wilderness First Aid and constant team monitoring. Safety is not a promise — it is a process applied to every step of the climb.

Real experience, not staged

Your guide has around 250 summits and 10 years on the mountain. He doesn't read from a script — he has lived this mountain since the day he was born in Moshi. That is the difference.

Certified Wilderness First Aid Apolo holds a Wilderness First Aid certification — specific training for emergencies in remote, high-altitude environments far from hospitals.
  • 🐢
Acclimatization as a priority Gradual ascent with acclimatization built into the itinerary. The mountain's rhythm is respected — we never push the body beyond what it can safely offer.

  • 🚁

Frequently asked questions

Every question
deserves an honest answer.

No. Kilimanjaro requires no climbing technique — it is trekking. What matters is basic cardiovascular fitness and, above all, mindset. If you can walk for 6–8 hours with elevation, you are a candidate. We recommend starting physical preparation 3 months in advance and always discuss your fitness before confirming the expedition.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is real and can affect anyone above 3,000m. Common symptoms: headache, nausea, excessive fatigue. Our operation is based on gradual ascent with acclimatization built into the itinerary — a respected pace is the main defense against altitude. Pulse oximeter is monitored regularly. If any concerning signs appear, the team is ready for immediate support and, if necessary, early descent. No summit photo is worth a life — and Apolo is the first to say that.
At the camps, there are public park latrines (variable quality, but functional). Our team always brings a portable toilet tent for the group. On summit night, there are latrines at the main camps. It is a different experience — but nothing that will stop you. We discuss this naturally during the briefing.
The two best windows are: January–March and July–October. These are the driest periods with the most stable weather on the mountain. The permanent snow on the Kibo glacier exists year-round, but clear skies make a huge difference — especially at the summit. Our expeditions are planned within these windows.
Yes to both. The Tanzania visa is done online via e-visa (simple process, we guide you). The yellow fever vaccine is required for many nationalities — you will need to present your vaccination card at entry. We also recommend malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor). We have a full documentation guide we send after confirmation.
In the first days, there is weak signal from Tanzanian carriers. Above 4,000m, practically none. Disconnect and enjoy — it is part of the experience. Many say those days of disconnection were the most important. Our guide has an emergency communication system independent of civilian signal.
The mountain is not for every day — and that is okay. Safety comes before any goal. If your body does not respond well to altitude, the guide will advise descent at the right moment. Apolo confirms: there is full support for early descent and evacuation if needed. This is not failure — it is the smartest decision you can make. And some come back for a second attempt.
Much better than you expect. Our field chef prepares hot breakfast, nutritious lunches and dinners in the dining tent. Fresh bread, hot soup, proteins, fruits. Tanzanian cuisine is rich and flavorful. Dietary restrictions? Let me know on WhatsApp and we will make sure you are well taken care of.
